Telegram Flood Wait, Peer Flood and Spam Blocks: What Each Limit Means
A Telegram flood wait is a timed pause, not a ban. When an account repeats one action too fast, Telegram returns FLOOD_WAIT_X and refuses that action for X seconds; bots get HTTP 429 with a retry_after value instead. PEER_FLOOD and @SpamBot limits are different: they follow spam reports and carry no countdown.
What is flood wait in Telegram, and what does the number mean?
Flood wait is Telegram's rate limiter talking. When an account or app repeats one action faster than the servers allow, the request fails with error 420 and the type FLOOD_WAIT_X, where X is the number of seconds to wait before that action will be accepted again. Telegram's API error reference puts it in one line: "A wait of X seconds is required."
So the flood wait telegram meaning is narrow. It is a cooldown on one method, attached to the account or bot that tripped it. Nobody reported you, and nothing was judged about your content. Library logs print it as flood_wait telegram, forum threads call it a telegram floodwait, and the official apps hide the code behind a plain "too many attempts, try again later".
The telegram flood wait time is not published anywhere. X can be a handful of seconds after a short burst, or hours after a client keeps hammering the same call; Telegram sets it case by case and documents no formula. Read the number. Respect it. A value that grows from one error to the next is the signal that the loop behind it needs changing.
Which Telegram limit message are you looking at?
Seven different messages get lumped together as "Telegram limits", and they call for different responses. Sort yours by where it appeared and whether it carries a clock.
| Message | Where it shows up | What caused it | Countdown? | First move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FLOOD_WAIT_X (420) | User-account API clients (Telethon, Pyrogram, TDLib apps) | Same method called too often | Yes, X seconds | Sleep X, then slow the loop |
| FLOOD_PREMIUM_WAIT_X (420) | File transfers on free accounts | Free-tier transfer cap | Yes | Wait; Telegram says Premium lifts it |
| 429 Too Many Requests: retry after N | Bot API responses | Bot over its per-chat, group or broadcast pace | Yes, N seconds | Pause that queue, resume after N |
| SLOWMODE_WAIT_X (420) | Groups with slow mode on | Admin-set gap between posts | Yes | Post again when the gap ends |
| PEER_FLOOD (400) | API clients writing to non-contacts | Account spam-reported and limited | No | Stop new DMs, check @SpamBot |
| "You can only send messages to mutual contacts" | Official apps | The same limit as PEER_FLOOD | No | Open @SpamBot and read the end date |
| PHONE_NUMBER_FLOOD (400) | Login screen, code request | Code requested too many times | No | Stop asking for codes for a while |
The top four are speed problems with a timer. The bottom three are not speed problems at all, which is why the advice that fixes one group makes the other worse.
How do you fix a Telegram flood wait without making it longer?
The only reliable flood wait telegram fix is to sit out X and then send less often. Retrying early buys nothing, and in our experience it tends to earn a longer wait on the next trip. Any flood wait telegram solution is really a change to the loop that produced the error:
- Catch the error and read X. Libraries such as Telethon raise a FloodWaitError that carries the seconds; log it instead of swallowing it.
- Sleep for X plus a small margin, then retry once. If the next X comes back larger, the pace is still too high.
- Give each account one queue. Parallel workers on a single login multiply the call rate on the same methods.
- Cache what you look up. Repeated username and chat lookups trip flood control long before the messages themselves do.
- Stretch the volume over more hours. Swapping in fresh accounts to dodge a wait moves the problem into spam reports, which take far longer to clear.
Whether a tool handles this on its own is one of the first things worth testing before you trust a Telegram bulk message sender with a real list. The same check applies to any option in our 2026 roundup of mass DM senders: a sender that retries on a fixed timer is generating its own flood waits.
What are Telegram's bot rate limits behind "429 Too Many Requests"?
Bots get HTTP 429 where user accounts get FLOOD_WAIT. The response reads "Too Many Requests: retry after N" and includes a retry_after field in its ResponseParameters, giving the seconds left before the request can be repeated. A telegram bot too many requests error is Telegram flood control applied to the Bot API, nothing more.
These are the only telegram rate limits Telegram writes down. Its Bots FAQ gives working numbers:
- About one message per second inside a single chat, with short bursts tolerated.
- No more than 20 messages per minute into one group.
- Roughly 30 messages per second across all chats for bulk notifications; past that, 429 errors start.
- With paid broadcasts enabled in @BotFather, up to 1,000 messages per second, billed at 0.1 Stars for each message above the free 30. Eligibility needs at least 100,000 Stars and 100,000 monthly active users.
A telegram 429 too many requests line in a bot log nearly always traces back to a loop writing to one chat too fast or a broadcast with no throttle. The telegram too many requests retry after value is the fix in itself: pause that queue for N seconds and resume. Most searches for "too many requests telegram" come from exactly this situation, and a plain telegram too many requests error never carries a ban with it. Keep in mind that a mass DM bot built on the Bot API can only write to users who started it, so these limits govern opt-in broadcast messages to subscribers, not cold outreach.
Is there a Telegram message limit per day for personal accounts?
Not a published one. Telegram documents no telegram message limit per day for user accounts and no fixed telegram flood limit, and its spam FAQ names no number either. Any daily figure you see quoted comes from tool vendors or forum guesswork.
What exists instead is a mix of signals. A telegram dm limit toward strangers appears when recipients report you. The telegram send limit on API calls shows up as flood waits. A "telegram message limit exceeded" notice inside a third-party tool is usually that tool's own reading of one of those two. Account age, how many recipients already have you saved, and where the number came from all move the line.
That is why a telegram send message limit can feel random. Two accounts can push identical volumes and land on opposite sides, because one is writing to people who know it. Telegram is most lenient with contacts and with people who wrote first, the case our guide to sending a direct message on Telegram starts from. If the plan is cold outreach, our notes on cold DM and DM automation explain why that is where limits bite first. Teams that send bulk messages on Telegram through several numbers should also read about running multiple accounts for bulk messaging before assuming each one carries its own quota.
What does PEER_FLOOD mean, and why doesn't retrying help?
PEER_FLOOD means the account itself has been limited after spam reports, so a retry changes nothing. Telegram's error database describes the account as spam-reported and points it to @SpamBot. There are no seconds attached: the restriction holds until it expires or an appeal succeeds.
In the official apps the same state appears as the mutual-contacts-only messaging restriction. Peer flood telegram errors and that banner are one condition seen through two windows. This is the real telegram spam block: new conversations with non-contacts are closed, while existing chats and replies keep working.
We saw this firsthand on our own sender. When we first wired in PEER_FLOOD handling, we treated it like a flood wait, sleeping and retrying. It never cleared that way; the account stayed limited until the restriction ran its course. Now the first PEER_FLOOD stops that account and puts it in front of a person.
A telegram spam restriction is a consequence of reports, so the useful question is which messages got reported. Our breakdown of what Telegram counts as spam lists the usual triggers.
How do you lift a spam block or unlock a limited Telegram account?
The answer to how to remove telegram spam block is short: wait for it to expire or, if it was a mistake, appeal through @SpamBot. There is no third route. The spam FAQ says early release for people who knew they broke the rules is impossible.
- Open a chat with @SpamBot and press Start. It replies that the account is free, or that it is limited, usually with the date the limit ends.
- If a date is shown and you did send unsolicited messages, stop writing to strangers and wait. Telegram says a first offence usually means a few days.
- If you believe the limit is wrong, choose the option that says it was a mistake and describe plainly what you actually sent.
- Once it lifts, change whatever caused it. Telegram says repeat offences bring longer blocks.
That is the whole telegram account limited fix. Paid "telegram account limited access unlock" offers have no access to Telegram's moderation queue that we know of; at best they file the same @SpamBot appeal you can file yourself. A telegram account restricted this way can still read, reply, and message contacts who saved its number, so conversations already open usually carry on. Questions about how our own service paces sending are answered in the Telegram Mass DM FAQ.
Why was my Telegram account restricted for no reason?
Usually there was a reason, just not one you saw. The most common is the number itself: Telegram's spam FAQ says some numbers draw a harsh response because of what a previous owner did, or because they are certain virtual or VoIP numbers. If you found your telegram account limited for no reason before sending a single message, that is the likeliest cause, and the FAQ asks you to tell @SpamBot what happened.
Other causes are quieter. Group admins can report spam posted in their groups, so a promotional post in a busy group counts even if nobody you messaged privately complained. Opening a first message with a link or an invite link draws reports fast. A burst of new conversations from a young account also looks like spam, whatever the text says. Any of these can leave a telegram account restricted for no reason its owner can name.
What does "phone number flood" mean when you log in?
Phone number flood telegram errors are a login problem, not a messaging one. PHONE_NUMBER_FLOOD comes back from auth.sendCode when the login code was requested too many times. Its sibling PHONE_PASSWORD_FLOOD means too many password attempts.
The official app turns both into a "too many attempts" style notice, and a telegram too many requests try again message at sign-in means exactly that. Stop requesting codes from every device, leave it alone for a while, then ask once. Tapping "resend" on each screen keeps the counter climbing. If a code never seems to arrive, check your other logged-in devices first: Telegram delivers login codes there as an in-app message before it falls back to SMS.
Is there an "unlimited" Telegram account that skips these limits?
No. Every account and every bot sits under the same flood control, and a telegram unlimited account offered for sale is an ordinary account with a marketing label, often an aged one bought from someone else. Telegram Premium raises several caps, and FLOOD_PREMIUM_WAIT_X is the one error the docs say Premium removes, which they tie to file transfers. Premium exempts no one from spam reports.
So the honest answer to how to avoid getting banned on telegram is dull. Write to people who expect you, pace sending to the documented limits, and stop at the first PEER_FLOOD. Our deliverability guide to avoiding mass DM bans covers warm-up and audience targeting in depth. To hand the work off, compare managed mass DM services side by side, or read how a mass messaging service or platform splits the job. Our own Telegram mass DM service runs opt-in campaigns at that pace.
FAQ
How long does a Telegram flood wait last?
Exactly as long as the X in FLOOD_WAIT_X, or the retry_after value for a bot. A short burst usually earns seconds; sustained hammering of one method can earn hours. Telegram does not publish the formula, so log each value and slow down if it keeps growing.
Does Telegram Premium remove flood waits or spam limits?
Not for messaging. Premium lifts the FLOOD_PREMIUM_WAIT limit that Telegram ties to file transfers, but it does not exempt an account from flood control on other actions or from moderation after spam reports.
Will switching IP or using a VPN clear a flood wait?
No. The wait is attached to the account or bot token and the action it was performing, so a new IP address changes nothing. Waiting out the stated seconds is the only clean exit.
Can a limited account still message people first?
Only people who have its number saved as a contact. Telegram's spam FAQ also lets a limited account reply to anyone who writes to it first, so conversations that are already open can carry on.
Is the 30 messages per second bot limit per chat or per bot?
Per bot, across all chats. Inside a single chat the guideline is about one message per second, and a single group should get no more than 20 bot messages per minute.
Can a group admin get my account limited?
Yes. Telegram's spam FAQ says group admins can report spam posted in their groups, and those reports go to the same moderators. Dropping promotional posts into unrelated groups is a common way to end up limited.
