Telegram vs WhatsApp: which app fits the job you have

In the Telegram vs WhatsApp choice, WhatsApp wins on private chats and Telegram wins on audiences. WhatsApp encrypts every chat end to end by default and has about three times the users. Telegram allows 200,000-member groups, channels with no subscriber cap, cloud sync across devices and a free bot platform. Pick by what you need to send, and to whom.

Neither app is better at everything. The split follows the job, not the logo.

How do Telegram and WhatsApp differ, feature by feature?

The short version of whatsapp vs telegram is that they share a chat screen and very little underneath. WhatsApp is built around your phone number and your address book. Telegram is built around a cloud account you can reach from any device, a public username and large public spaces. The table puts the telegram vs whatsapp features side by side using each company's own published numbers.

A few rows need a caveat, and the sections below give them. If your real question is community software rather than a messenger, our Telegram vs Discord comparison for communities covers servers, roles and voice rooms instead.

Is Telegram or WhatsApp more secure?

For private conversations, WhatsApp is the safer default, because every personal chat and group is end-to-end encrypted without you doing anything. Telegram's own FAQ says normal private and group chats use "server-client encryption", and only Secret Chats are end to end. Secret Chats exist only between two people and stay on one device. So on telegram vs whatsapp security, the honest answer is that Telegram can match WhatsApp for one conversation at a time if you remember to start a secret chat, and cannot for groups.

Telegram argues the other side: cloud chats sync instantly and survive a lost phone, and the same FAQ calls Telegram "more secure than mass market messengers like WhatsApp". WhatsApp, owned by Meta, collects more metadata through its links to Meta's other services. Treat both claims as marketing, and judge by the default: most people never change it. WhatsApp Channels are an exception on the WhatsApp side, because WhatsApp's launch post said channel updates are not end-to-end encrypted, since they are meant for wide audiences.

Which app keeps your phone number and data more private?

Telegram hides your number better, and WhatsApp hides your messages better. That is the real shape of telegram vs whatsapp privacy. On Telegram, people can find and message you by @username, and your number is shown by default only to contacts who already have it. On WhatsApp, a chat starts from a phone number, so anyone you write to in a group can see yours unless the group is a Community announcement space or a Channel, where WhatsApp keeps follower numbers hidden.

Data requests differ too. Telegram's privacy policy says it may hand an IP address and phone number to authorities on a valid court order, and it lists such cases in its transparency reports. Because WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, it cannot read them, though it can share account and usage data. If what worries you is strangers seeing your number in a big group, Telegram is the calmer place to be. If what worries you is anyone, including the company, reading your messages, WhatsApp or the encrypted apps further down are the better fit.

How many monthly users does each app have?

WhatsApp is roughly three times bigger. Mark Zuckerberg said on Meta's first-quarter 2025 earnings call that more than three billion people use WhatsApp every month. Pavel Durov announced in March 2025 that Telegram had passed one billion monthly active users, taking a swipe at WhatsApp in the same post. Both are company figures, not audited counts, and neither company has published a newer headline total that we could find on 17 October 2026.

The gap matters less than where the users are. WhatsApp is the default phone-number messenger across much of Latin America, Europe, Africa and South Asia. Telegram is strongest in Eastern Europe, Central and South Asia and the Middle East, and in crypto and tech circles everywhere. Before choosing for a campaign or a community, check where your own audience already is: our Telegram user statistics by country breaks the billion down by market. On telegram vs whatsapp users, a smaller app where your people actually read is worth more than a bigger one they ignore.

Telegram group vs WhatsApp group: which holds more people?

A Telegram group holds up to 200,000 members, while a WhatsApp group tops out at 1,024, the cap WhatsApp set when it launched Communities in November 2022. For a family or a project team, both are plenty. For a public community, the whatsapp group vs telegram group gap decides the matter, because WhatsApp's answer to scale is a Community: several linked groups with one announcement group on top.

Telegram groups also come with more admin tools. You can hide the member list, add slow mode, split the chat into topics and give each admin narrow rights; our explainer on the Telegram supergroup versus a basic group shows what changes as the group grows. Moderation at that size needs help, and the best Telegram group management bots handle spam, captchas and welcome rules. When the group changes hands, transferring Telegram group ownership is a two-step check, and members can join from a printed Telegram QR code for the group.

WhatsApp channel vs Telegram channel: what can each one do?

Both are one-way broadcast feeds, but a Telegram channel does more. Telegram channels have no subscriber limit, keep full history, take comments through a linked discussion group, show view counts on every post and can run paid posts and boosts. WhatsApp Channels, launched in 2023, sit in a separate Updates tab, hide followers from each other and the admin, and store history on WhatsApp's servers for a limited time.

So the telegram channel vs whatsapp channel decision depends on whether you want a publication or a notice board. For a publication, Telegram gives you more levers: enabling comments on Telegram channels, a pinned message guide for evergreen posts, channel and post view counts, Telegram channel analytics once you qualify, and channel boosts that unlock features. Discovery is easier as well, through Telegram channel directories and the methods in our channel promotion guide. Run a Telegram giveaway and the platform itself picks the winners.

Telegram bot vs WhatsApp bot: which is easier to build and run?

A Telegram bot is free to create in minutes through @BotFather, while a WhatsApp bot runs on Meta's Business Platform and costs money per message you send first. That is the core of telegram bot vs whatsapp bot. Telegram's Bot FAQ says bots message their users "at no cost" up to about 30 messages a second, and paid broadcasts above that cost 0.1 Stars per message.

On WhatsApp, Meta's pricing page says it has charged per delivered template message since 1 July 2025, by category (marketing, utility, authentication) and by the recipient's country. Replies inside the 24-hour window after a customer writes to you are free. Telegram bots also cannot open a chat with someone who never pressed Start, so neither platform lets a bot cold-message strangers. For the whatsapp bot vs telegram bot build itself, Telegram has more no-code options: see our no-code Telegram bot builders, an n8n Telegram bot setup, or Telegram integrations with Zapier and CRMs. Small bots do real work, from a quiz bot for your group to Telegram chatbots for business support.

Telegram vs WhatsApp for business: which suits customer messaging?

WhatsApp suits businesses whose customers already message them by phone number; Telegram suits businesses that publish to an audience and sell through bots. For one-to-one support, WhatsApp Business is the market default in many countries, and the free 24-hour service window keeps simple replies cheap. Marketing messages, though, are a paid template on every send, and Meta must approve each one.

Telegram's side of telegram vs whatsapp for business is a Business account (hours, location, quick replies, greeting and away messages) included with Premium, plus channels and free bots. Our guide to Telegram for Business covers what each feature does. Selling works in-app: accepting payments on Telegram, a Telegram shop and store bot, and paid membership bots for gated groups. Reach is easier to buy, too: you can advertise in Telegram channels and groups or run official Telegram Ads and pay for them in TON, and app developers have Telegram mini app ad networks.

WhatsApp business vs telegram, then, often ends with using both: WhatsApp for orders and support, a Telegram channel for announcements. The telegram vs whatsapp business split also shapes how you write. The playbook in messaging and conversational marketing explained applies to either app.

Where do Signal, Threema, Session and iMessage fit?

Each of these beats Telegram on default encryption, and each gives up something Telegram has, usually scale or reach. The useful way to read signal private messenger vs telegram, threema vs telegram, session vs telegram and telegram vs imessage is by what each one asks you to hand over to sign up.

Telegram next to four encrypted messengers (each app's own FAQ, blog or security pages; read 17 October 2026)
AppNeeds to sign upDefault encryptionTrade-off against Telegram
SignalPhone number (hidden behind a username since Feb 2024)End to end everywhereNo big public channels or bot platform
ThreemaNothing: random Threema ID, one-time purchaseEnd to end everywherePaid app, so a far smaller network
SessionNothing: locally generated Account IDEnd to end, sent over onion routingGroups capped at 100 people
iMessageAn Apple deviceEnd to end, PQ3 since iOS 17.4Apple users only
TelegramPhone number (hidden behind a username)End to end only in Secret ChatsScale, channels and bots

Signal's usernames announcement of 20 February 2024 says you still need a phone number to register, but others no longer see it by default. Session's FAQ says you need "a mobile number or an email" for neither, and that a Swiss foundation oversees the app. Apple's security blog describes PQ3 as post-quantum protection for iMessage keys. If you want the most private chat, any of the four beats Telegram. If you want an audience, none of them comes close.

Telegram vs WhatsApp: which is better for you?

The better app is the one that matches your job, and most people end up with both. Use the list below to settle telegram vs whatsapp which is better for your own case, and remember that people who type wa vs telegram into a search bar are usually choosing for one specific task, not for life.

  1. Private chats with people you know: WhatsApp, or Signal if you want less metadata.
  2. A public community over 1,000 people: Telegram. Our guide to managing a Telegram group or channel and the wider community management strategy and metrics piece cover running it.
  3. Publishing to followers: a Telegram channel, with ad income once you meet the Telegram channel monetization requirements.
  4. Customer support over a known number: WhatsApp Business.
  5. Automation and bots on a budget: Telegram, where making money with Telegram bots is a real side business.
  6. Brand or crypto communities: Telegram, as the brand community examples and our notes on crypto and web3 community building show.

Cost rarely decides it. Both apps are free for personal use; our page on what Telegram and Premium cost lists what Premium adds, and how Telegram makes money explains why the free tier stays free.

What did we find when we checked both apps side by side?

When we checked both apps' official pages on 17 October 2026 for this comparison, we saw how often popular guides still quote old limits. Several pages we read still give WhatsApp groups 512 members, a cap WhatsApp raised in 2022, and many still say Telegram bots cost nothing at any volume, which stopped being true once paid broadcasts arrived. We kept only figures we could trace to Telegram, WhatsApp, Meta, Signal, Session or Apple directly.

The other thing we noticed was how differently the two apps treat a first message. WhatsApp makes a business pay for each marketing template and hold to a 24-hour window. Telegram lets a person write to anyone with a username, but its spam reports limit careless senders fast. Our guide to DMing on Telegram covers what stops a chat, and the piece on viewing and exporting Telegram members explains what admins can see.

How do you reach many people on Telegram without spamming them?

Reach many people on Telegram by asking them to come to you first: a channel, a bot they started, or a group they joined. Unlike WhatsApp's paid templates, Telegram does not charge you to post to subscribers, so the cost is attention, not money. Telegram broadcast messages compares the channel, group and bot routes, and you can bring people in with Telegram live streams and video chats. Ask group and channel admins before you post in their space.

For one-to-one messages at volume, the Telegram Mass DM bot guide explains how opt-in lists and paced sending work, and the rest of our blog covers limits, spam rules and copy. If you are coming from WhatsApp, treat your contact list as a starting point, not as permission: ask people once, in a plain message, whether they want to follow you on Telegram.

FAQ

Is Telegram safer than WhatsApp?

Not by default. WhatsApp encrypts every personal chat and group end to end. Telegram does that only in Secret Chats, which are one-to-one and stay on one device. Telegram does hide your phone number better, because people can reach you by username.

Can I use Telegram without a phone number?

No. Telegram's FAQ says every account is tied to a mobile number. You can hide that number from everyone and share an @username instead. Session and Threema are the apps that need neither a number nor an email.

Why do some people switch from WhatsApp to Telegram?

Mostly for size and tools: 200,000-member groups, channels with no subscriber cap, free bots and the same chats on every device. People who switch for privacy alone are often better served by Signal.

Can a WhatsApp group be moved to Telegram?

Telegram can import chat history exported from WhatsApp into a Telegram chat, but members have to join themselves. Share the new group's link or QR code in the old group and give people time to move.

Is WhatsApp Business free?

The WhatsApp Business app is free. The Business Platform used by bots and CRMs charges per delivered template message by category and country, while replies within 24 hours of a customer's message are free.

Does Telegram have ads?

Not in private chats or groups. Sponsored messages appear in large public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers, and Premium subscribers can turn them off.
